Caulder
Meaders, son of John
Milton and Mattie Meaders, was born in 1877. His father
hired William Dorsey and Marion Davidson to turn ware and teach
the elder sons the trade. Caulder used this knowledge to teach
his younger brothers. He didn't stay in the pottery business
long, but moved out West to become a railroad man.
While
out West, Caulder married Barbara McGuire and had 2 daughters.
He lost one of his arms in an accident on the railroad. When
his wife was killed in an auto accident, Caulder came back
home to Georgia. After returning, he married Bertha Hamilton.
She was born in 1889. They had one son Jack
Wayne Meaders, born in 1927. Caulder passed away
in 1947 and is buried at Mossy Creek Methodist Cemetery. His
grave is unique in that he has two headstones. His sister
didn't get along with his wife and bought him a headstone
of his own. After Bertha passed away in 1962, their son had
a marker placed near the original stone listing both of their
names.
Though
Caulder didn't turn pottery, his son Jack did. Like his cousins,
Jack took up the business after he retired. He married Jessie
Stover in 1949, and had two children, Terry Jo and Jeff. Jack
and Jessie worked in the shop together for many years. Their
partnership created many beautiful pieces. Jack would turn;
Jessie would decorate the pieces. They worked in this manner
until Jack passed away from Cancer in 1993. He is buried at
Mossy Creek.
Their son
Jeff turns some now in his parent's shop, just across the creek
from the old home place.
